This reflection grew out of our recent Recovery In Christ meeting at the jail — a reminder that grace meets us even when consequences remain.
There was a man who met Jesus on the worst day of his life.
He wasn’t in church.
He wasn’t cleaned up.
He hadn’t made things right.
He didn’t have time to live differently.
He didn’t get a second chance to prove anything.
He was nailed to a cross.
Guilty.
Broken.
Paying for what he had done.
The Bible calls him the Penitent Thief.
He didn’t argue his case.
He didn’t blame his past.
He didn’t say he was misunderstood.
In fact, he said the opposite:
“We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve.”
He knew why he was there.
And then, through the pain, through the shame, through the blood and the nails — he turned his head toward the man dying beside him and said:
“Jesus… remember me.”
That was it.
No promises.
No bargaining.
No speeches.
No chance to fix anything he had broken.
And Jesus answered:
“Today, you will be with Me in paradise.”
The sentence didn’t change.
The nails stayed in his hands.
The cross stayed on his back.
The crowd kept mocking.
The pain didn’t stop.
But everything changed.
He was forgiven.
He was loved.
He was accepted.
He was no longer alone.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus,
I don’t have anything to offer You today but the truth.
You know where I’ve been. You know what I’ve done. You know the harm I’ve caused — to others and to myself.
And I know that some of what I’m facing right now is because of my own choices.
But like the man on the cross beside You… I am asking You to remember me.
I believe that You see me. I believe that You have not given up on me. I believe that Your love is greater than my worst mistake.
I am not asking You to erase my past or to remove every consequence.
I am asking You to forgive me.
Wash me clean. Give me a new heart. Change me on the inside, even if my circumstances on the outside stay the same for a while.
Walk with me through whatever lies ahead. Give me strength to face it. Give me peace in the middle of it. And remind me that I am not alone anymore.
Jesus… remember me.
Amen.
